The file employs a 5 field structure: 1) Full Postcode, 2) Street, 3) Locality, 4) PostTown, 5) County

Fields 1) and 4) i.e. Full Postcode and PostTown, are always populated.

Field 2) normally populated unless the Postcode relates to a POBox (circa 115,000) or address without street data.

Field 3) populated where Locality forms part of the postal address (only approx 35% of UK addresses).

Field 5) is the "postal county" and only present where it used to form part of postal address; no longer required by the RM.

Where an address includes enhanced Street and Locality information (what the RM term “double dependant street” / “double dependant locality”), which applies to far the minority of UK addresses, such information is concatenated to Fields 2) and 3) respectively.

This information set provides structured Street level addressing for the UKs 1.7 million postcodes.
